Without My Flashlight

“Walk in it while you can, so you will not stumble when the darkness falls.
If you walk in darkness, you cannot see where you are going.” John 12: 35

Walking in the darkness is the one thing we all experience. Whether it is spiritual darkness or physical we all stumble over the hidden things in the dark. Darkness hides terrifying, ghostly shadows and harmful objects. Only a flashlight can illuminate the fear and reveal a pathway out of your darkness.

During the daylight hours we walk straight paths because sunlight guides our way - so it is in our spiritual life. This spiritual sunlight comes from Jesus. Did He not say that: “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness.” (John 8: 12 NLT)

This verse challenges you and me to walk while the light remains. Like the disciples, we need a reminder to take our spiritual flashlights into the darkness. However there is one more reminder about our flashlights, make sure the batteries are charged.

Have you ever experienced the terror of a summer thunderstorm? The flashes of lighting that knock out you electricity and you are in the basement in the dark. You feel for the electrical switch and no power. Stumbling and fumbling in the dark, you realize your flashlight is on the kitchen counter. With a stomach in knots, you hit every object making your way to the basement stairs. Eventual your feet hit the bottom step to the stairs. Finally reaching the upper steps, you hit your head on the basement door.

If you think this can’t happen to you then think again. Did you memorize a verse today? Have you read your Bible this morning? If not, you are walking without your flashlight. At any moment a spiritual storm could knock out your spiritual electricity. Your will stumble over every hidden object. Darkness creeps up on you and me without warning. Take the truth from this verse and keep your flashlight near.
