Why Did it Blow Up?

by Patricia Charlton
Published November 27, 2005

There is that sound again (pop, splat, pop, splat, pop splat). I must be hearing things. Choosing to ignore that sound, I continued to relax on the couch. After all, my husband must being making popcorn.

“Honey, are you making popcorn?”

“No, I’m not.”

There it is again (pop, splat, pop, splat).

“Honey, did you hear that?”

Now, that sound wasn’t popcorn or the wind against my windows. Something was making that noise. There it is again (pop, splat).

“Honey, that sound is coming from the storage room”

With hand on the knob, I swung the door open. Now, the mystery was solved. There was orange, slimy sauce was dripping from the ceiling, hanging from the lighting fixture and splattered on the walls. Everything was coated in an orange color. Now, I heard that familiar sound (pop, splat, pop, slat). That sound came from the corner. There I had stored masonry jars filled with pumpkin sauce. The masonry jars had exploded. I have since learned that pumpkins should be frozen

Under pressure the bacteria in the pumpkin sauce fermented. Over time the pressure build up in the masonry jars causing them to explode. This little mishap reminded me about this: “Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?” (I Corinthians 5: 6). When I chose to ignore the signs of fermenting sins, those sins will build up pressure and explode. The Holy Spirit would remind me about dealing with the warning signs of ungratefulness, bad attitudes and little lies. If I do not release the pressure and deal with my sins, they will explode into my relationships. An explosion causing great harm. After all a little bacteria can raise a lid off a masonry jar.
