Who Are You?

by Joyce Sykes

Often we are asked the question ‘Who are you?’ It happens at various social events and even in the grocery store. Several years back my daughter was shopping and a total stranger walked up to her asking that question. At first, it took her off guard (especially in this day and age) but then the inquirer added this statement. “I know you belong to one of those Sykes’ boys. Which one is your daddy?” Her resemblance to her father drew this older man’s attention.

Through the years since then, that event has crossed my mind and with it, the thought it should be that way in our Christian walk. Do the people who encounter us see our resemblance to our heavenly Father? Does His love shine through us? Is it apparent when we have spent time with the Lord in sweet fellowship?

Each one of us knows individuals like that. They always have a smile on their face and reveal His love in their actions and attitude. I have two special friends like that and cherish the time I can spend with them. There is little doubt they have spent time with their Father. Their wisdom and insight is invaluable, but I particularly love the quiet sense of love and joy that emanates from their spirit.

Their confidence comes from one simple fact they know who they are. Each woman has spent time with their heavenly Daddy and came away with the knowledge that He loves them deeply and everlastingly as His daughter. Imagine being able to hold onto that knowledge. You are His child.

We can walk boldly and confident in this same knowledge, by accepting His word as truth for us and not just for someone else. We look around and think ‘so and so’ is more worthy and often even pray the Lord will reveal Himself to them in a real and powerful way. We see our self as second-class citizens who are not entitled to the same revelation or intimacy as others.

That is a lie straight from the pit of despair. We have been bought with a price, paid for by the precious blood of the Spotless Lamb and adopted as sons and daughters of the Most High. Jesus willingly laid down His life to make a way for us to have access to our Father. His blood shed on Calvary enabled us to become children of the Most High.

That one fact alone should bring unspeakable joy into our hearts. We ARE His sons and daughters. When trouble comes, we can tell Daddy about it and He listens. At times of sorrow, He wraps us with a blanket of His love. He imparts His divine strength to walk through our problems and at other times, He delivers us. In His infinite wisdom, we know Father knows best for us and we can rest in that knowledge.

Our son was paralyzed at age 17, a horrific event that we still live with today. Nevertheless, as we stood praying in the Emergency room the Lord spoke softly to my heart asking me a question. “Can you trust Me even in this?” Those few words brought a reality in my life that I never knew before. No matter what came my way, deep within I knew I could trust Father.

Please realize I am not saying I understand, but I had lived with the horror of life without the Lord and found it much easier to walk in the knowledge that He promise to never leave me nor forsake me. Even in this time of devastation, I knew without a shadow of doubt that my Lord was with me. Truthfully, I will never understand, but I know I can trust Him.

It brings me great joy to know I am loved and He loves each one of you equally as much. With that knowledge, we can walk this road called life knowing we are His child and we can trust Him even when we don’t understand. His promise is true.

“I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty.” 2 Cor. 6:18
