Weedless Potential

Sometimes we don't know the weeds from the flowers. I sure don't. Sometimes it's tempting to let the weeds stay just to see what will come of them, especially if, like me, you hate to kill anything with potential, even a plant. The trouble is, if we allow those weeds to stay, they soon take over our yard, and what could have been beautiful turns into a disorganized, and ugly, mess.
Sometimes in our own lives we are tempted to allow sins, which often seem small, to remain in our lives when we know they are not what God wants in us. We may tell ourselves that by speeding we will keep the guy behind us from getting mad, but what about the police officer who pulls us over? In both cases, our speeding serves as a negative testimony and act of hypocrisy, neither of which helps to further the gospel. We justify cheating people in small things in order to avoid looking weird, but when we see others cheating us, we rant and rave about that person's poor values. The truth is, God's rules are there for our benefit as well as for His Kingdom purposes. Making cheap excuses doesn't justify our disobedience, and calling them "small things" doesn't minimize our sin. An old quote rings ever true in each of our lives: "Sometimes your life is the only gospel people will read." Let's make it a good one, one true to the gospel our Lord died to write.
