The Runner

Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize. You also must run in such a way that you will win.
I Corinthians 9: 24 (New Living Translation)
Every eye is focused on the runners. Their muscles are stretched, ready to sprint at the sound of the gun. Hearts are pounding! Minds are focused! On your mark, get set! Bang! Off the runners go! But only one runner will win the prize. These runners knew that this race was worth their effort.
Now, one runner moves ahead of the pack. With toned muscles and a streamlined body she is sure to win this race. This runner has taken seriously the truth about hindrances. This truth: “Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us.” (Hebrews 12: 1 NLT) was her guide during training. The coach’s words, “Toss! Toss it now!” rang in her ears.
The pack is closing in. This will be the ultimate test of her endurance. The pounding pain from aching muscles and the panting will test her stamina. Just a little further to go! “Focus! Focus on the goal.” the coach’s word ring in her ear. “Take your strength from this truth: “Think about all he endured when sinful people did such terrible things to him, so that you don’t become weary and give up.” (Hebrews 12: 3 NLT) Champions never give up!
With panting and muscles stretched to their limit, the ribbon breaks as she crosses the finish line. The crowd cheers, but she knows that: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me – the crown of righteousness.” (II Timothy 4: 7, 8 NLT)
Preparation, training and a proper attitude have been the attainable goals for this runner. All the training has paid off in her victory. She understood: “ that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize.” (I Corinthians 9: 24 NLT)
What did I learn about endurance from this runner? Endurance comes at a cost. Preparation and removal of all hindrances will develop my stamina. Before runners compete, they have prepared themselves to win. Am I prepared to win?
“All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to win a price that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.” (I Corinthians 9: 25 NLT) Like these athletes, I need to develop self-control. I asked myself several questions. What are the costs of winning? What is my attainable goal? Is it developing the character of Christ? Has my preparation and training for my race of faith been paying off lately? The next race will tell!
