The Makings of Security

"I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand." -Psalm 40:1-2 (NIV)Sometimes life is rough. Often in times of turmoil I turn to God for hope, rest, and deliverance. In my mind, "rest" means curling up in my Father's arms and being at peace in Him.
Rest does not take place in slimy pits full of mud and filth. Or does it?
In the psalm above, David states that he waited upon the Lord, who turned to him and heard his cry. But don't stop there. Read verse two. David "waited patiently" in a slimy, miry, muddy pit, that is, he waited in the midst of troubles and confusion. He knew God would help him, therefore he found himself able to wait patiently. Sure enough, at the right time, God lifted him out of the slimy pit and put him on a rock, a place with sure footing. The result?
"He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD." -Psalm 40:3 (NIV)How great is that? Or rather, how great is our God? When we're stuck in our own muddy pits, isn't it wonderful to know that God will rescue us and give us a new song of praise? Trust Him, and know that wherever you are, whatever you're going through, God is there, and He is worthy of our praise.
