The Great Hour Struck is set in World War II within the legendary 101st Airborne Division in the days leading up to D-Day and the crucible of the Normandy campaign that followed. The author describes the book this way: “It is very much in the same vein as Saving Private Ryan or HBO’s Band of Brothers, just toss in a love story and a little more (theistic) philosophy contrasted to god-less philosophies.”
Weaving truth through rapid-moving scenes, The Great Hour Struck is a book with some real firepower. One of my favorite lines is found at the very end of the book: “Thought leads to action. Action has consequences.”
When I was finished with the book I had two reactions. First, I appreciated how the author showed the cracks in postmodern and humanist thinking in such a winsome and compelling way. By establishing common ground with the reader, this moving story adeptly communicates God’s story of redemption. I highly recommend this book as an evangelistic tool for those you may know who are caught up in relativism and philosophical fabrications.
Second, I was sad that the story was over. But then I learned that this is just Part One. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
If you like WWII history and love to see it come to life, then I heartily recommend this evocative novel by Gary Varner. Check out his website for more information: www.garyvarner.net.
