The Fragrance of God

Bending over, I grabbed another cotton shirt out of the dryer. The fabric was soft and warm to the touch. You may consider me weird, but I take pleasure in doing laundry. I’ve always enjoyed the task, so becoming a part-time Home Helper for the elderly, allows me the opportunity to do their laundry also. During the winter months, I am comforted by the warmth on my arms as I grab out an armful of clothes.

Lightly handling garments from the dryer, I bring it close to my nose and inhale deeply the floral scent mixed with the detergent’s. It transports my mind to my grandmother’s wash-house in their backyard 40 years ago.

My grandparent's town was located near the Gulf coast region, so their days were humid, hot and sultry during the summer months. Most of my childhood days were spent outdoors after they would slather on me a thick layer of oily, anti-mosquito repellant, as I would dash off to explore many “adventures.” Huge magnificent pecan trees in their back acreage provided much needed relief from the Texas blazing sunshine. Their large, gnarled branches arched a canopy over the well manicured St. Augustine grass that my grandfather carefully tended.

My cousin and I would take occasional breaks from playtime to run into Maw Maw’s wash house. The clean scent assailed our noses when we would enter the wooden structure. Located in the middle of the floor were her washer, scrub-board and wringer. We would stay just long enough to cool down. She never expected us to do any chores!

In Psalms 51:7 states: “Clean me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow.”

Daniel 7:7 states: “As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His clothing was as white as snow.”

Someday, all of us who have received Christ as Savior will have the marvelous opportunity and privilege to snuggle up close to our Savior’s chest. We will experience the ultimate sensory delight of breathing in His fragrance of grace and see His dazzling garment. The softness will caress our face and arms as we nestle against His chest. There is absolutely no earthly comparison with that experience! Truly, that is what Heaven will be for me.
