Strong Hands

The hot Texas sun blazed down on us as we sat next to my niece’s beautiful swimming pool. She and her husband had recently purchased their one story ranch-style house on 5 acres. She had completed the interior decorating and added the final touches. For Father’s Day, we visited her, along with her mom and dad accompanied by my mother and my 3 year old granddaughter.

My niece’s husband, Scott, swam in their pristine pool and even though I wore sunglasses, the rays reflected off the water as a mirror, and partially blinded me. I had remembered to apply an abundant amount of sunscreen to myself and granddaughter, who was being watched by Scott in their pool.

She squealed in delight as she kicked her feet and sprayed Scott in the face. He took time to swim under water and playfully grab her toes. As I sat close by on a lawn chair, Scott pitched her high up into the air. She had a momentary look of panic on her face. As she came back down into his firm, secure grip, her facial expression relaxed. It happened so quickly, I didn’t have time to object.

I’ve been listening to spiritual teachings these past several days from two different sources. The message from one is that we need to trust the Lord and quit trying to become a better Christian but put our trust in Him to mature us. The other teaching stated that faith is simply setting our minds on trusting the Lord.

Watching my nephew with my little granddaughter, the Lord gave me a lesson: Life is certainly unpredictable. Unexpected tragedies and events happen to us everyday which can cause terror and fear to grip our hearts suddenly. God wants us to rest in the knowledge that when we feel we are free-falling emotionally, we can experience the assurance that we will land safely into His powerful, strong Hands.

Just as my granddaughter experienced her cousin’s strong hands; we can also land safely into our Heavenly Father’s strong Hands during our unexpected calamities. He is able to remove all panic and fear from our faces and place in us an everlasting peace and trust in our hearts, if we will just trust Him.
