Stepping on Toes

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a school dance. I remember, though, the awkwardness of being asked to dance by someone new. It was easy to dance to the fast songs since you just had to move to the music. The slow songs were a bit more challenging because you had to get used to the rhythm of your partner as you tried to maneuver around the dance floor. If you didn’t follow your partner’s lead, your toes inevitably got stepped on.
As Christians God is our partner in the dance of life. We are to follow His lead, step by step. If we allow Him to direct us, obstacles are easier to manage. Steps we normally would not have attempted on our own are eventually undertaken.
If we don’t allow God to lead, toes get stepped on. We stumble and lose our balance, sometimes even falling down. Any sign of rhythm is lost. Sometimes we are so insistent on being the leader that we end up dancing alone; we leave our partner behind.
God, however, is merciful. When we realize we can get nowhere without Him, we can call, and like the gentleman He is, He will be at our side in a moment to help us up. Sometimes our bruised toes or sore legs keep us from moving very far. It takes time for us to get the right rhythm. But our partner is long suffering. He will wait as we heal, and eventually, as we call upon Him again and again, we learn to dance in beautiful harmony.
Stop stepping on God’s toes. Let Him lead. It is easier to move through life with Him than without Him.
