Silence

“I have often regretted my speech, never my silence.” - Xenocrates

Peace, solitude, the ability to hear the very thoughts of God-these are the rewards of silence. In a world where noise and constant murmurs of sound are glorified as the “god of the age”, silence stands alone beckoning me to be still. Silence teaches me to listen and hear the melody of The Way, The Truth and The Life. Silence is a gift and in many ways a sacred act.

Silence was the response that Christ gave to the false accusations made by the Jews. Silence was Jesus’ ultimate reply to Pontius Pilate’s eternal and probing questions. And recently for me, like my Lord, silence was the only answer. Torn by words that were meant to wound and destroy, I pondered my reply, but all that came was silence. Maybe that was truly the only answer that I needed to give.

In Christ’s silence we are left to contemplate the amazing weight of His sacrifice. When we stop and listen we learn that the Lord’s silence in all of His trials spoke louder than the cries echoed against Him in the streets.

It is in silence that we are brought closest to His pierced heart and it is in the silence that we realize we were the ones who nailed His hands and feet. That I was the one He refused to condemn to death by breaking His silence. And it is in my silence, when faced with suffering, that He comes and stands alongside assuring me that this too will pass.
