Shattered Pieces

It happened so quickly, yet I braced myself for the loud crash that followed. I watched helplessly as the bowl careened to the floor.

Several years ago, our dishwasher quit and with the water rationing for our area, my husband and I opted not to buy another one. Many evenings, I let our dishes drain. Since I had insomnia, I got up about 4:30 a.m. I had finished working on my computer and wanted to eat a bowl of cereal. The larger ceramic bowl perched precariously on top of the other dishes in the drainer fell.

I have been good at not breaking too many dishes in the prior years since installing our ceramic floor. I learned a valuable lesson. A ceramic bowl hitting on a ceramic floor causes shards of glass to travel out for approximately 5 feet in diameter. It wasn’t difficult to pick up the large, broken pieces but almost impossible to locate and sweep up the other fragments of glass. Since my husband was asleep, so I couldn’t vacuum. Surprisingly, I wasn’t upset as the Lord revealed His truth to me.

These past several days have been extremely taxing emotionally for me. I had received the news regarding my favorite aunt’s hospitalization. She wasn’t expected to live out the day. In addition, my boss’s apparent lack of understanding and criticism regarding my job duties were untrue. His lack of appreciation had brought frustration to my heart. Yet sweeping up the shards was an illustration to me of the condition of my heart: broken into so many miniscule pieces and tossed so far apart it seemed impossible to repair.

I've known that the Lord repairs our broken hearts. But a truth began to take root in my heart that He not only fixes and repairs the large pieces of my wounded heart but carefully and meticulously puts all of the small pieces together as well. He alone healed my broken heart.

Psalm 69:20

"Scorn has broken my heart
and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
for comforters, but I found none."

Psalm 34:18
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
