One Small Stone

Without a doubt, the enemy is out to destroy every single one of the Lord’s children who are shining their little portion of God’s light in their corner of the world. The reality of this fact is being reveal, often daily, even in the smallest of communities. As Christians, we must honestly face that truth and live our life accordingly. The enemy of our soul has such a hatred of our heavenly Father that he desires to destroy anything and anyone that the Lord cares about. That includes you and me! Add to that equation our children, extended family and our churches.
John 10:10 reveals the intent of this enemy. He wants to steal, kill and destroy! He longs to steal our joy, our time and especially our testimony. If the enemy of our soul can effectively destroy our ability to share what the Lord has worked into our hearts, he hinders our light from chasing the darkness from another human soul. Often he takes our sins and mistakes to taunt and throw them back into our face, even those covered and forgiven by the blood of Jesus. He delights in implanting the thought “How can God use you? Look at what you did! You are such a failure. No one will want to hear anything you have to say.” Too often, we fall for that, hook, line and sinker!
Many of God’s children react in the face of opposition like the Israelites did in I Samuel 17. Goliath, a solider for the Philistines, stood taunting the failures of seasoned warriors. Saul’s army had seen many battles, yet the words and size of this single individual brought them to a complete standstill. No one ventured out to face this formidable enemy. Then a small insignificant young man on a mission for his father arrived on the scene. As he listened to the insults of this giant anger arose deep within his heart. It was one thing to ridicule a man, but this Philistine dog was mocking his Beloved Yahweh.
David’s heart and spirit cried out ‘Enough’. It no longer matter who this giant foe was, or the difference in their size, he had listen to all he wanted to hear. His brothers and the remainder of the soldiers might be frozen with fear but he never allowed their emotions to cloud the issue. If it was a battle this philistine warrior desired, he had met his match.
As the small shepherd gathered his stones, his heart cried out for strength. This young man, although small in the eyes of the world, was a giant in the spirit realm. He knew Jehovah-Jireh, his great provider. His faith was in Jehovah-Sabaoth, the Lord of host. He had spent long lonely nights singing praises in the dark to his God. No matter what threatened his little flock, he found the strength to face the enemy and defeated the intent to harm one of his precious lambs.
Now, he stood before the greatest threat in his young life without fear. David was a man on a mission. A holy righteous anger rose from the depths of his toes at the insults this giant hurled toward his people and more importantly his God. As the sling picked up speed in the air, his prayers grabbed the heart of David’s heavenly Father. One single stone swiftly flew with deadly force into the enemy’s forehead. Goliath was defeated by one small shepherd willing to believe in the power and might of his God in battle. What looked impossible in the eyes of men became reality through one man’s relationship with his God.
Too often we assumed the position of Israel’s army that day. We stand on the side-lines, fearful. Our attitude is ‘Who am I? I don’t have the ability, or power to face this foe. This situation is bigger than me. This is impossible” We forget that this battle is not ours but the Lord’s. We struggle in our ability when we need to see that it’s “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith Jehovah of hosts.” (Zech. 4:6)
No matter what giants are mocking and threatening you today, realize that you are a child of the Most High God. You have the same ability to call on Him in battle as David. Your weapons may be words, or maybe prayers. But these weapons are just as powerful today as the smooth stones David used to slay his giant. The Lord is waiting for you to cry out ‘Empower me with Your Spirit today Lord, just as did David. Use my stones just as effectively today. Use me!”
