Renouncement

Read 1 Samuel 28:7-20

"Let no one be found among you who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord" (Deuteronomy 18:10-11 NIV)

Before I was a believer, I was a member of the New Age Movement. When I became a Christian, I repented and left behind my participation in the Occult. It was several years however, before I learned that I needed to formally renounce my involvement in the occult in order to be truly free of its harmful effects. Once I did this, I was freed from a large amount of suffering in my illness.

Whenever we get involved in occult practices, we are signing an agreement with the enemy. This agreement has to be broken in order for God’s power and healing grace to move freely within us. Taking part in any aspect of the occult blocks our ability to receive the healing that Christ has for us.

In today’s world it is very easy to be drawn into the occult. New Age beliefs and practices are everywhere and are now considered relatively normal by our society. Many of the accepted practices are:

  • Playing with a Ouija board or Tarot cards

  • Seeking to know about the future from a physic, fortuneteller or horoscopes

  • Practicing astrology, yoga or transcendental meditation

  • Being involved in the Masons, a Masonic Lodge or Rainbow girls

  • Wearing or believing in the power or protection of amulets or crystals


    • All of these things attract the enemy to us and place a barrier between Jesus and our healing. Many of us have been touched by the occult somewhere in our lives and need to be cleansed of it. If we have been involved in any of these things we need to make a formal Declaration of Renouncement. Then we will be able to truly move forward with the Lord in our healing.


    Prayer

    This prayer was taken from the teachings of Francis MacNutt. Read over the Healing Exercise and then pray the following prayer:

    "Lord I confess that I have (read the list here). I see these now as sins and I ask Your forgiveness by the blood of Your cross. I renounce you, Satan, and any involvement in the occult that I once had. I command you in Jesus’ name to depart from me and trouble me no more. I take the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, and cut myself free from any bondage to the occult world. I close the door between that world and me and I seal it with the blood of Jesus, barring it with His cross. Thank you Lord for your forgiveness and for freeing me to love You with all my heart, mind, and soul. In the Holy name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen."


    Healing Exercise

    Make a list of any occult or New Age activity that you may have been involved in. If you can’t think of anything, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal something you might have missed. Once you have made this list, take it and pray the prayer above. When you have finished, tear up the list, and thank Jesus for the freedom He has given you.
