Generational Gains

by Jay Cookingham

Legacy is derived form the old Latin word for legate. A legate is an official emissary, or an ambassador. In that way, the impact we have on a future generation, the legacy we leave is like sending an envoy on ahead fully representing our wishes, values and objectives. How can I send a “good emissary” ahead? Well, let me slip on a few sport metaphors and see if I can make a point. (Yes, the pun was intended).

I may not be able to play above the rim like Michael Jordan, (even the latest version of his airness) but I can live above the unethical plays in the business world. Without sacrificing my own principles, I can score points fairly and honestly, and thereby leave a good name for my children. Like the huge football lineman who opens holes for running backs to run through, I can open holes, block potential tackles and create opportunities for my children. Clearing the way for them to use their giftedness in the open field and score on their own. How? By encouraging them, studying the way they are, the way they like to "run", teaching, guiding and believing in them.

My body may not have the grace of an Olympic figure skater (seeing me skate is NOT a pretty sight) but my words and actions toward my children can be filled with grace. As with any jump in a rink, I can measure my words before I say them. Carefully weighing the impact they will carry when they land on the ears of those entrusted to me. There is strength in grace, and my actions can be strong and firm in the disciplining of my children. As with the skater rounding the rink with his partner held above with one strong lift. There is no doubt about the strength of the skater as we watch, but what we see foremost is the grace. I can lift my children with the way I discipline them, firmness strengthened by grace. Our legacy will flesh itself out in the lives our children. Today, this day, we can build towards the future, as we covenantly love those in our care.

Blessings, Jay
