Gems from Hannah Whitall Smith

Ah, the weekend! May you find rest and encouragement in the Lord as He speaks to your hearts.

Some thoughtful quotes from Hannah Whitall Smith:

"Nothing but seeing God in everything will make us loving and patient with those who annoy and trouble us. They will be to us then only the instruments for accomplishing His tender and wise purposes towards us, and we will even find ourselves inwardly thanking them for the blessings they bring."

We may make out of each event in our lives either a Juggernaut to crush us, or a chariot of God in which to ride to heights of victory. It all depends on how we take things---whether we lie down under our trials and let them roll over and crush us or whether we climb up into them as into a chariot and make them carry us triumphantly onward and upward."

"If our eyes opened today we would see our homes, our places of business, and the streets we walk, filled with the 'chariots of God.' That cross person in your household who has made life a burden for you and has been the Juggernaut to crush your soul into the dust, may henceforth be a glorious chariot to carry you to the heights of patience and long-suffering."

"Few people are really comforted by God's promises of care because they do not believe them. They are waiting to have an inward feeling that His words are true before they will believe them. They look on them as beautiful things for Him to say; but if they should speak out honestly, they would confess that since they have no such inward feelings, they do not believe His words apply to them."

"As long as our attention is turned on ourselves and our own experiences, it is turned away from the Lord. It is not that He hides himself; He is always there in full view of all who look unto Him; but if we are looking in another direction, we cannot expect to see Him."

"It is all very well, perhaps, to rejoice in God's promises or in the revelations He may have granted us or in the experiences we may have realized; but to rejoice in the Promiser himself---Him alone---is the crowning point of the Christian life. This is the only place we can know the peace which passes all understanding and where nothing can disturb."
