Faith: What It Is

My thanks to Don Whisnant at GracePoint Ministries for this spiritual nugget:

Getting It Right Regarding Faith: A Grace Enablement for Godly Living

Faith (Gr. pistis) is a noun; it is what you have, not what you do. (We do not faith; instead, we have faith.) Also, faith is not self-generated; it is a spiritual dynamic produced in you by the Holy Spirit. (If the Holy Spirit does not generate faith in you, there is no other way for you to have it.) The seed (Gr. sperma) of faith is the Truth communicated to (sowed in) your spirit by the Holy Spirit as you read or hear God’s Word.

God gives faith in increasing measure - more, much, great, and perfect faith. It is a provision of God’s grace given to enable you in increasing measure to confess (who he is and your need for him), to pray (ask), to continue praying (supplication), to trust (believe), to give thanks, and to obey.

"And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him." ~ Hebrews 11:6, ESV

"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." ~ Romans 10:17, ESV

"Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus." ~ Revelation 14:12, ESV
