Despair

by Ed Price
Published October 14, 2004

These things I have spoke unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33 KJV)

Despair comes to all of us at one time or the other. We may lose our jobs or suffer a terrible personal loss. A feeling of utter hopelessness overwhelms us. We become depressed. In fact, we may feel so defeated that not even prayer will offer an escape from our emptiness.

But Charles Brent once said, "Pray hardest when it is hardest to pray."

In times of deepest despair -- when there seems no one a person can turn to-- is the very time you should lean the heaviest on Jesus. "Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted," He told the multitudes at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. (Matthew 5:4).

Jesus can comfort as no one else can.

The depths of your despair may envelope you like a shroud, but those who know Jesus can always see the light that tells you He is near. And there is joy and assurance when you know in your heart He will never leave you -- Ever!
