Deepest Desires

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness … Matthew 5:6, New American Standard

Part 1

There will be times in our spiritual journey when we may come face to face with self-doubt. It's almost a guarantee that, as we strive to follow God's leading, we will question our faith and, ultimately, ourselves. But, as is the case with our walk in general, it isn't about us or the activities in which we might be involved. If we focus on those things, then self-doubt will win.

Yet, to hunger and thirst after righteousness sounds like such a lofty thing, especially when compared to those who are poor in spirit, those who mourn, and the meek.

I wonder if a true search for God's righteousness could be a way in which we can measure our own spiritual desires – especially when we struggle with uncertainties.

We all may hesitate at times in trying to understand what our Father would have us do. However, a true hunger and thirst after righteousness can begin with sheer desire. The word perseverance comes to mind. There may be times when we are stuck in the muck of everyday life and, try as we might, we can't seem to pull ourselves out of the world's worries. They suck the very life and breath out of us or, at the very least, they weigh us down with a burden that lays heavy on our hearts and souls.

How do we search for righteousness if we are saddled with the yoke of disappointment in the things that surround us? The truth is we don't have to be. There is a way to walk free of the quicksand of self-doubt so that we may seek God's perfect design for our lives.

Paul tells us: "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1.

If we truly hunger and thirst after righteousness, God empowers us to throw off that yoke of slavery to uncertainty and pursue Him. Perseverance has an air of urgency about it. But it also incorporates a resolved determination. When God sees us pursuing Him in that way, He reveals Himself to us.

Regardless of the disappointments or the self-doubts, we can be sure that when we seek God – when we are so hungry and thirsty for His presence that everything else pales in comparison – we are exactly where we are supposed to be.

Don't let the insecurities of this world blind you to the assurance that you are in God's will. If God's righteousness is the deepest desire of your heart and you seek Him first, your fears and self-doubt are supernaturally transformed into security, and a true, unshakeable peace will begin to fill your life.
