Answering the Call

Recently I experienced a little “wake up call” from God. One day my husband Bill came home from his job and announced in a very serious tone, that he had decided to become a Worship Pastor. At first I thought I would humor him and the desire would pass, but when he actually started to send out resumes and go on interviews, I began to get nervous. You see by taking on the job of a Worship Pastor, Bill has unwittingly put me into the dreaded position of, dare I say it- a Pastor’s wife!
If my friends from college could see me now they’d say, “What? You’ve got to be kidding!” That’s what I thought too as I strolled through the local Christian bookstore in search of a meaningful birthday gift to give a friend. As I haphazardly wandered into the “you might be a pastor’s wife if…” section of the store, my eyes fell upon a plaque full of sentimentality aimed at pastor’s wives.
On it was an encouraging quotation of some sort meant to inspire and lift up the woman who held this lofty, high and mostly forgotten position in life. “Oh Lord,” I thought as I looked at it, realizing that this would be a new calling in my life, “Are you sure you know what you are doing? This is me here! The one who thought Habakkuk was the name of an Indian spice! The one who has to look up which ten commands are actually in the Ten Commandments? Surely you can’t mean me?”
As I turned to find my way back into the “reality” section of the store, I was startled. There, right at my eye level, was God’s answer to my question. In front of me stood another gift plaque that read, “I know the plans I have for you, plans to give you a hope and a future (Jer. 29:11).” I stood there laughing at God’s sense of humor realizing that in this small gift store, I had been called.
So now, as Bill wades through the church interviews and the different offers I am slowly warming up to the idea of becoming a pastor’s wife. I figure hey, if God’s got a sense of humor …maybe the church will too.
“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”- Jeremiah 29:11
