An Ongoing Construction Job

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12: 1, 2
King James Version

Yesterday, I was talking with someone about all the construction that has been taking place on the streets close to where I live. They have been working on the streets for a long time. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and they will finish soon. In fact, I read in the paper they plan to be through with all the construction work by the summer of 2009.

As I was thinking about the construction work, I realized that there is a construction job that has been going on for over two thousand years. It has been going on since the crucifixion of our precious Saviour. It is an ongoing construction job which will never end and the builder is Jesus. He started this construction job of love and forgiveness and the repairing of our hearts when He hung on that cruel cross of agony and horror for you and for me.

Jesus has been awarded this building contract to remove the sin from our hearts and replace it with His precious cleansing and atoning blood and repair our broken hearts and lives by our dear Heavenly Father. When Jesus hung on that cross, He laid the foundation of unconditional love, forgiveness, grace and mercy. The contract to build and repair our hearts and our lives was awarded to the greatest builder of all, our precious Saviour.

The construction on our hearts is free to us but it cost Jesus everything, His very life. Thank God for the builder of our hearts and lives, the Lord Jesus Christ, because many times due to the pressures and stresses in our lives we begin to crumble. Sometimes, we feel like we just can’t keep serving Jesus in the midst of all the criticism we receive. It is then that we need to remember that Jesus kept going day after day in spite of the criticism that He received. If Jesus kept going for us, how much more should we keep going for Him.

Thank You, Father, for loving us enough to send Your beloved Son to be the builder of our hearts and lives. May we live our lives in such a way that we will bring happiness to You instead of sadness. Father, we ask that You would please search our hearts. If there is anything in our hearts that is displeasing to You, we ask that You would please forgive us and cleanse us from all sin. Again, thank You so much for Your amazing love, grace, mercy and forgiveness. Amen.
