A Gentle Tug

It snuck in unnoticed. It appeared, at first, as a soft summer breeze before it suddenly wrapped around my heart as a vise. My client’s expression today, as the deep lines of his face disappeared into a laugh, caused me to smile as well and warm my soul.

Initially, he had sat stoically and expressionless when I first entered his room a month ago. I announced that I was with an agency offering in-home care. His two sons lived out of state and needed peace of mind regarding his care in their absence.

I provide cleaning, light meals, and companionship. During the 9 hours a week, a gentle bond has formed between us. I believe my heart is tender after the loss of my own father 7 years ago. My emotions have been so affected and I am truly blessed. We all look and need love and to give out love to others unconditionally. God certainly has an unlimited supply for us to use. It makes no difference if the person is related to us or not. We can bond with each other in His love.

My client’s aloof demeanor has been transformed into a gentler one. We now have the freedom to banter back and forth yet still respecting each other.

In the sunset years of our lives, we all need support and encouragement from those around us. Everyone of us need to be willing to offer service and love during that time in a senior’s life which is so very vital to them. We need to slow down from our fast “treadmill” existence long enough and spend quality time with our senior citizens from time to time. What a vast supply of wisdom and love they can provide us if we take the time to listen.

A reminder gently wraps around my soul and tugs affectionately at my heart that God, has provided a surrogate dad to love on this Father’s Day. God’s gentle Spirit makes it all happen.
